The end of the White Stripes

News broke yesterday (2nd Feb.) that White Stripes had called it a day after thirteen years together and six studio albums.

The statement came yesterday evening after appearing on the band’s official website, it stated:

“The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health.

“It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve What is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.”

It went on to say that the White Stripes no longer belong to Jack and Meg but “belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to.”

They thanked their fans and said that their record company, Third Man Records, will continue to release unreleased material but they will not be performing or promoting these recordings.

It was inevitable that this was going to happen sooner or later as they hadn’t performed together since 2009 and hadn’t released a studio album since Icky Thump in 2007; so it shouldn’t have come at that much of a surprise.

The fact that Jack has been focusing on other projects and been in Raconteurs and Dead Whether for so long also should have meant that people weren’t really to expect any new material from White Stripes. However it still doesn’t really soften the blow of their split. The band were genius in my opinion and always produced music that was superior to anyone else, their simple guitar and drum combination was simple yet effective on so many levels.

They will undoubtedly be missed in the music world.
