Leaked MGMT album forced to become available early

March 22, 2010 at 6:10 pm (Music News) (, , )

‘Congratulations’ was originally planned to be made available online on April 12 as a free download  but following a leak  the band have had to push the date forward.

The follow up to 2008’s ‘Oracular Spectacular’ can be downloaded here: http://www.whoismgmt.com/.

On their site they said: “…the album leaked, and we wanted you to be able to hear it from us. We wanted to offer it as a free download but that didn’t make sense to anyone but us.”

The decision is great for those students who can’t afford to buy the latest albums but how is making albums available online, for free, going to help cd sales. Record stores are already struggling but with the increase of bands now opting to take the digital route how long is it before we see the likes of HMV closing down?

i think the closing of hmv is not a dead cert, and despite illegal downloads, and general downloading, game and dvd sales still seem fine.
i feel that prestigious independent record shops will survive as the market for vinyl, and music HMV doesn’t stock is high. The survival of these independent record shops is vital to the music culture.
The mgmt album is amazing and i will be buying it on vinyl as the artwork is lovely too.

Yeah i agree i think if they didnt have dvds and games then they would be struggling, also i think thats why they’ve recently introuduced gig tickets and ‘the next big thing’ tickets too.
Havent heard the MGMT album yet but will have a listen soon.
